We have added support in Movable Type to talk to the new weblogs.com XML-RPC ping interface (more information). Rather than automatically checking for changes in all registered blogs (the old behavior), weblogs.com now requires that an XML-RPC ping be sent to mark the blog as changed.

We have added support for this new interface, and have written instructions for setting up XML-RPC ping support in MT. (Note: the instructions assume that you have already installed version 1.1 of Movable Type, so you should do that first.)

We have released version 1.1 of Movable Type. Existing users should use the upgrade distribution to update their MT installation, and should follow the new upgrade instructions.

New users should download the full distribution after agreeing to the license agreement.

The new release provides some bug fixes as well as some new features; read through the changelog for a full list, or take a look at an abbreviated list of features here.

We are planning a new release of Movable Type for next Monday, October 22. This release will be distributed in two forms: as a full release, and as an upgrade.

Among an assortment of bug fixes and stability improvements, here are some of the bigger features that will be included in the next release, version 1.1:

  • Added the ability to delete authors and blogs.
  • You can now preview comments before posting them; you define the layout of the preview page using the new Comment Preview template.
  • Bookmarklet windows are now customizable: for example, if you feel that the bookmarklet window really needs a control to select the category for the new entry, you can customize the window to include this control. The customizable fields are: category, excerpt, more text, and allow comments checkbox.
  • Added Nickname field to author record, along with new MTEntryAuthorNickname tag to display it. This allows using a different name for display than for login.
  • Template Modules, small chunks of HTML that you use throughout your site (like headers, footers, etc.); you can encapsulate chunks of HTML in one place, then include them into your templates using the new MTInclude tag.
  • Improved out-of-box compatibility with NT and IIS.
  • When creating a new blog, the default templates will automatically be imported into that new blog.
  • If your machine does not have sendmail, MT can now send mail using SMTP.

We are going out of town for the weekend, so we will not be answering email messages or patrolling the support forums.

We've set up a mailing list for users of MOVABLE TYPE.

More information and subscription information can be found here.

The mailing list is intended to provide a forum for those who are interested in discussing how they and other users are making the most use of MT with regard to their weblogging and web publishing needs. It is also a place to discuss Movable Type development.

This is not a technical support mailing list. Questions and problems should be directed to the support forum.

The Ikonboard powered support forum is now up.

Pleae post your questions, problems and comments in the appropriate areas.

First, let me clarify that we've never made any claims of superiority over any other weblogging software.

We've never claimed to be the best.

We've never presented MOVABLE TYPE as the program that will revolutionize weblogging.

We're just developing a system with a lot of the features that we've heard users are looking for.

Luckily, we've received a lot of good word of mouth. People are hoping that MT will be THE program and THE solution.

With expectations like that, I'm sure users are bound to be let down. And of course, whenever something receives too much good press, the inevitable criticism just gets louder and uglier.

MT is a work in progress. Please remember this.

We're just two people -- a husband and wife team -- who started this as a fun project to make my own weblog easier to maintain.

We're releasing it today so that it will grow to be an even better product. We could have waited until a later day -- perhaps catch even more bugs that pop up now again.

There will be bugs. Wrinkles need to be ironed out. We never thought we'd get as big as we did before the release.

I know you're supposed to distance yourself from your product. We will make every attempt to do so. The fear of failure is just so much higher when you feel like your peak of praise came long before your product was ever released.

Onto the positive, then.

We are proud of what we've developed. The About page covers all the features that we've incorporated into this release. Especially exciting is the ability to create multiple blogs and entry categorization.

We've already received a lot of requests for multiple categorizations. Don't worry, we've heard you.

So enjoy.

(Oh, and thanks Dad)

So you signed up to be notified about MT's release but you never heard from us again. What's the deal with that?

Well, we decided not to send the notification out today only because we feared that we'd overwhelm our hosting provider. In the first hour, over a hundred people had downloaded MT. So, we were a bit weary of informing over 500 others that the system was ready.

We're still going to send the notifications out (probably in batches) so don't think we forgot you.
