Movable Type is Free for Personal Bloggers
With the release of Movable Type 3.3, we’re excited to note one of the best new parts about Movable Type, and it’s got nothing to do with the dozens of new features.
Movable Type 3.3 is free for your personal blog.
For as many authors as you want, as many blogs as you want, you can just go get it. As always, you can have affiliate links or AdSense or a tip jar on your personal blog. And there’s dozens of new capabilities in Movable Type 3.3 that make it well worth the upgrade, including support for tags, widgets, huge improvements to the templating language, and activity feeds that let you manage all of your blog’s activity right from a single feed.
Of course, one of the best parts of the Movable Type platform is that we offer professional support for it. So you can buy support for your personal blog directly from us, and right now, it’s just $49.95/year. Cheap!
Honestly, we’ve put a lot of work into making Movable Type a professional tool, and that’s the reason it’s the most popular blogging platform for businesses, organizations, and professionals. But we know that personal bloggers are an important part of our community, and our success with businesses (and now with enterprises) helps us make Movable Type free for the individuals that want a professional-grade tool for their personal blogs.
So give the new version a try. If you want support, get a license and talk to our help team — you’ll find out why people rave about our support. And don’t forget to mention us to your boss or your coworkers when they start asking, “Hey, should our company get a blog?”

Thanks... I'm happy to use MovableType... Again, Thanks for Free...
Hey, isn't Movable Type 2.6x also free? So, now version 3.3 is free, too. But, not the versions in between.
Will version 3.4 be free, too? What about version 3.5?
Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice ...
This is one of the best news I've heard all week and I'm sure its going to make blogging much more prevalent!
How's it "fool us once" in the first place?
They made no secret of the fact that version 3 was going to be a paid for version. It wasn't exactly a surprise, and nothing said that if you didn't want to pay for it, you had to upgrade.
After all, they do have to pay developers, support staff, etc. Were you really surprised and fooled?
In fact, if I recall, you could use version 3 for free, but you were limited in how many authors and blogs you were allowed.
Now, they've expanded it...Deal.
Excellent! Going to upgrade from 3.16.
..they don't have to make it free. You must understand that. They are excited tho, so they have released it to the public for free.
BE HAPPY, don't be a punk!
i've always loved using movable type. and now with more capabilities available for free, i love it even more.
i can already imagine building a complete blog network with just a single MT installation. yumm...
anyway, keep up the good work guys!
Great. Personal bloggers (community) is the core why MovableType and Six Apart were so successful, and I am so happy to see the core was continously valued, and kept. It is great news!
This is great news. I was getting overrun with comment spam with MT 2.551 even after installing MTSCode. I was not about to pay for MT 3.2 when I could switch to WordPress for free. I suspect I was not alone here either.
This decision came just in the nick of time to keep me on the MT platform. Kudos to 6 Apart.
I've been using MT for a couple years now. I'm currently at 3.2 but plan on upgrading. Since I'm a personal blogger and only use MT with two blogs, I've never payed a cent. :)
Thanks Movable Type for providing such a powerful piece of software! My only complaint is that the support documents have become ridiculously unhelpful. Thankfully the MT support forums usually provide a solution when I need one. Downloading 3.31 as I type.
Spiffy! We grouped all our personal blogs into one way back when 3 rolled out, will be nice to seperate them again, even though we did buy an updated key years ago (Anyone else recall version 2? Geez, do I feel old!)
I am with you on this one!
hello
i want a free template for movable type!
best regards
Thanks guys! Now I have no excuse for not using it! I can host my friends blogs now :) It's cool!
